On March 9, I told the Easter Egg story to a group of 5 -9 year olds. The story is based on the Polish Legend of the Easter Eggs. It's an enrichment lesson found in Godly Play, volume 4.
It was one of those weeks when it seems hard to get the kids to settle down. They had lots to talk about, and two of the children were new to Godly Play.
I am always amazed at how everything changes as soon as it's time to start the story. Suddenly everyone is quiet and attentive. The children do seem to love hearing the stories of our faith.
This story is about an old man who goes into Jerusalem with a basket of eggs to sell. He sees three people being taken through the city to be crucified. He helps one of the men carry the cross. After the man dies on the cross, he returns to the city and finds his basket filled with beautifully decorated eggs.
We passed around both of our Ukrainian Easter Eggs. One was made from wood, and other was a hollow, fragile egg. The children were very careful. It's hard to believe they were the same rambunctious kids that wouldn't settle down at the beginning of the time.
After the story, most of the children wanted to make their own eggs. We had precut egg shapes so the children could just pick their colours and symbols. They talked about the meaning of the different symbols and what colours they wanted to use.
Making Easter eggs was a lot of fun. Some of the children made two eggs. One girl decided to decorate both sides of her egg so that she could hang it up.
