Children's Earth Day 2008

On April 20th, we at Pilgrim celebrated Earth Day. The lesson I planned for the 5-11 year olds fit in beautifully with the creation story told during worship by our minister, Erin Stirling.

We talked about how God put people in charge of taking care of the planet and discussed briefly how the children felt we were doing. It was obvious by their reaction that they are aware of some of the environmental issues we are facing.

Many of them spoke about how they spent earth hour and how disappointed they were when they looked out at their neighbors homes and saw lights on.

After our discussion, the children worked together to plan and draw a mural of our earth. It was nice to see the children were comfortable sharing their ideas and able to come to an agreement of what would work best. They created a lovely picture.

As some of the older children became restless with the drawing, I put out a variety of items from my recycle box. As the younger children continued drawing, the older children came up with new uses for the items.

We finished our lesson by sharing some watermelon-a taste of God's creation.
