This Earth Hour,
turn off the lights.
|
Pilgrim United Church is challenging everyone on the Westshore and in the Sooke area to take up the spirit of this campaign. What can you do during Earth Hour?
- Turn off all lights. Use candles, lanterns and flashlights if you need light.
- Go for a walk and look at the stars.
- Organize some lights-out hour activities in your apartment building or on your street.
Take up the challenge! Plan to participate in Earth Hour -- without lights -- 8:30 to 9:30 pm, Saturday, March 28th, 2009.
Tell us what your are doing for Earth Hour.

Its the day after Earth Hour 2009 and I just went looking on the net to see what people had been doing last night. I was appalled at the apathy and downright contempt for the hour.
What did we do last night? We played crib by candlelight! We did notice that most of neighbours had lights burning and that disappointed me. I just read about the candlelight parties that some of you had. What a great idea....for next year...and to get the lights turned off by our neighbours. I think Earth Hour should not just be a participation but a celebration!

Me again...
I found this article -- from a year ago, yes, but still relevant. :)

PUC's lobbying efforts around Earth Hour made the local paper. Read the clipping on the bulletin board at Painter Road, or see the article at

My son is going to a Cub Scout camp this weekend. I won't be able to be there on Saturday, but I'm hoping to get some of the other leaders to share the story of Earth Hour with the kids there. At the time, they'll be out at the camp fire. So while there won't be any switches to flick off, it can certainly be a time of learning, and thinking of all the others who will be helping make the Hour a success.
Oh, yeah. We'll turn off the lights and power bars in our house. :)

During Earth Hour we plan on sitting in front of the fire in the fireplace, light a few candles and play a board game.

We enjoyed Earth Hour last year and so we are going to do a repeat this year.
We will invite friends to our home and we'll have dessert and wine by candlelight. Last year it was a perfect hour and I'm sure it will be again this year. And may we remember the reason we are doing this.

We are inviting everyone on our short street to a candle-light Earth Hour party between 8 & 9. Everyone has been asked to remember to turn all their lights out when they come! Friend and neighbour Gwynneth Barlow is helping to host the party. Hopefully our street will be in darkness that night!

I think that Jujube and I may just join Marianne and Dale for a walk along the lagoon. After all, friends are one of the most important aspects of this planet...

What a wonderful idea!
We are going to invite friends to join us for dessert and wine by candlelight.
But we won't forget the reason for Earth Hour. And I'm sure that will be a part of our conversation. This is just a first step.

Earth Day invitations will be hand delivered to our phenomonal cul de sac neighbors to join us outside for hot chocolate by candlelight on March 29th.
Also working on a community victory garden and looking for contributions of ideas, location or your labor of love to create a place to share. If interested, please contact me at carolhamilton05@aol.com

Earth Hour is going to hit right around the time our kids start getting ready for bed. But brushing teeth, reading stories, etc. by candlelight will probably sound like a fabulous plan to our three. We've got some great kids books about making changes, and living with respect in Creation. It'll be a great chance to talk as a family about our ecological footprint, and wonder how God might be asking us to adjust things around here.

We hope to be walking down along the beach at the beautiful Esquimault Lagoon on March 29th . We will be looking at the stars and planets. Mars and Saturn should be visible if there are no clouds. The moon will be in its last quarter on the 29th . We hope to look across the water at Victoria and see a darkened city .We will be giving thanks for being alive on this wonderful planet .

We have decided to switch off all electricity at the main power switch for Earth Hour, while we sit in front of a fire in the fireplace sipping a glass of wine and talking about "the good old days"!
Oh, yes, we'll also have a discussion about what the three of us can do with that $100 x 3 = $300 rebate. Wow -- just think what all that money (coming back to those of us who don't need it) could have done to improve the inadequate supportive/subsidized/affordable housing initiatives that the government is proposing?
We're presently thinking about donating it to those folks that have to spend more than one hour once a year without the amenities we have come to take for granted.
